Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard named alongside Lionel Messi in UEFA Ultimate Team of the Year

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has been named in UEFA's 'Ultimate Team of the Year' - an all-time, all-star XI of players to have played in the Champions League.

The team was compiled by bringing together the players who have made the most Team of the Year appearances, though there were six players in midfield who that applied to.

Gerrard, as well as Barcelona legends Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta, made the final team.

But Gerrard beat Luka Modric, Kaka, Ronaldinho, Toni Kroos, Pavel Nedved and Zinedine Zidane, who had all been in the Team of the Year three times, because the ex-Liverpool captain had been nominated for the Team of the Year more frequently than the others.

Gerrard was named in the UEFA Team of the Year in 2005, the season Liverpool won their fifth European Cup in Istanbul, and in the following two seasons as well.

Real Madrid and Barcelona dominated the side, with Gerrard and Philipp Lahm the only two players to have never played for either club, winning the Champions League with Liverpool and Bayern Munich respectively.

Iker Casillas was the goalkeeper, with a back four of Sergio Ramos, Carles Puyol, Gerard Pique and Lahm.

Gerrard, Xavi and Iniesta were the midfield trio, with Lionel Messi, Thierry Henry and Cristiano Ronaldo the forward line.
