Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard lifts lid on famous picture in Everton shirt

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has lifted the lid on the famous picture of him wearing an Everton shirt as a child - insisting it was only due to him winning a competition at Goodison Park.

Gerrard admits he is teased 'every couple of days' on social media over the snap which shows him in a full Everton kit alongside two trophies won by the Toffees.

Boyhood Red Gerrard went on to establish himself as perhaps Liverpool's greatest ever player, scoring 186 times in 710 appearances for the Anfield giants.

He helped them to two FA Cups, three League Cups and - famously - the 2005 Champions League when he spearheaded one of the most fabled comebacks in football history in the final against AC Milan.

And now he mas moved to clarify the circumstances which saw him don the kit of Liverpool's fierce local rivals.

"That was a competition," he told The Greatest Game podcast with Jamie Carragher. "I won that after a penalty shootout.

"One year it was at Goodison and one year it was at Anfield.

"It was a local tournament but the prize was, you go to Goodison and get a brand new Everton kit.

"It pops up every couple of days on Instagram !

"I used to get all different kits for Christmas, I had a Tottenham kit, a Norwich kit.

"These pictures have never surfaced, thank god. But the Everton one keeps popping up."
