Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard emerges as surprise managerial target for Premier League rivals

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is on the shortlist to replace Rafael Benitez as manager of Newcastle United.

Gerrard , who was Benitez's captain in Istanbul back in 2005, led Rangers to a 2nd-place finish in the Scottish Premier League last season.

It was the 39-year-old's first term as a senior boss after initially working at Liverpool's Kirkby Academy. He spent one year honing the skills of an under-18 team that featured Adam Lewis, Curtis Jones and Ben Woodburn.

The Telegraph report that Newcastle are yet to make a formal approach for any candidate after Benitez confirmed his departure earlier this week but Gerrard heads their shortlist alongside Patrick Vieira and former Merseyside rival Mikel Arteta.

Eddie Howe, Sean Dyche and Steve Bruce are said to be 'fall-back' options for the Magpies.

Benitez took charge of Liverpool in 2004 before being sacked six years later. He has managed Newcastle since 2016 and led them back to the Premier League following relegation.
