Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard can win Scottish Premiership title with Rangers this weekend

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard could wrap up his first Scottish Premiership title this weekend with Rangers.

Gerrard has overseen an unbeaten league campaign so far, with 27 wins and four draws from 31 matches this season.

Glasgow rivals Celtic have won the last nine Scottish Premiership titles, but are 18 points behind Gerrard’s side going into this weekend’s fixtures.

The gap is such that a win for Rangers against St Mirren at Ibrox today would see them claim a 55th league title if Celtic fail to beat Dundee United on Sunday.

That would be some achievement for Gerrard, whose side travel to Parkhead for the next Old Firm meeting against Celtic on March 21.

Whenever it is confirmed, the trophy will be the 40-year-old’s first as Rangers boss since he took over the Scottish giants at the start of the 2018/19 season.

Gerrard has also guided his side to the last-16 of the Europa League where they will face Slavia Prague.

"For me it's about becoming champions as quick as we can in any way we can do that,” he said this week.

"The important thing as a group is to just keeping winning football matches and it will happen when it happens.

"I totally respect that some fans might want to win it this way or that way - but I don't think anyone will complain when we get this over the line.

"The important thing is to get that trophy back, get 55, knock all the 54s off the walls - that's the main thing for me, adding to the wonderful history of this club.

"If it happens on Sunday in April or May, I don't care so long as it happens."

Rangers’ title is bound to lead to speculation linking Gerrard with other jobs, with the former midfielder perhaps set to follow a similar path to ex-Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, who took over Leicester City following a trophy-laden spell with Celtic.

However, Gerrard’s former Liverpool team-mate Jamie Carragher rejects the idea that a Premier League role would represent a step up from Rangers.

“If Gerrard continues to win big in Scotland, it is sure to land him many Premier League job offers, with the implication that managing a mid-table team in England is more attractive than being Rangers or Celtic coach,” he wrote for The Telegraph .

“I am not convinced that applies in Gerrard’s case.

“There was a time when I might have gone along with the idea that Rangers is a good first stepping stone for my former Liverpool teammate, and he should have his eye on a swift Premier League return in readiness for an inevitable Anfield reunion later in his career.

“Having seen what he is building at Rangers, I do not believe he has to leave Ibrox and prove himself anywhere else. Certainly not yet.

“He has obviously fallen in love with the club and the city of Glasgow and looks to be settling in for the long haul.”
