Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard breaks silence on returning to Anfield with Aston Villa

Steven Gerrard has admitted that he won’t be able to ‘control the noise’ surrounding his upcoming reunion with Liverpool.

The Reds legend was appointed as Aston Villa’s new manager last week, replacing Dean Smith at the helm who has since been named as Norwich City’s new boss.

Gerrard spent just over three years in charge of Glasgow Rangers, winning the Scottish Premiership last term for the first time in a decade for the club.

The 41-year-old is in his first full week as Villa boss, and has recently given his first full interview since taking over at Villa Park.

Liverpool are due to welcome Gerrard and Villa to Anfield in the Premier League on Saturday, December 11 (3pm).

Gerrard was asked about the prospect of returning to Liverpool for the first time as a manager and since leaving as a player in 2015.

He had a year in charge of Liverpool’s Under-18s in 2017/18, before moving to Rangers, and this will be the first time he returns to Merseyside since leaving Anfield.

“I don’t think me or anyone else will be able to control the noise, but for me that’s not important,” Gerrard told Villa TV, when asked about the inevitable hype that will surround his return to Anfield.

“What’s important is the chance to go to Anfield and win and try and take maximum points, which is the attitude and mentality that we’ll have going into every game.

“It is what it is, I want to win every game that I play in. Now my priority, my focus and everything that I will give on a daily basis will be for Aston Villa.

“One thing I can guarantee for all the supporters, the players and all the staff here is that when I commit to something, I’m all in.”
