Liverpool legend sends Matthijs de Ligt transfer message to Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has sent a transfer message to Jurgen Klopp amid speculation about Matthijs de Ligt.

The Ajax defender has emerged as the hottest prospect in Europe after a stunning season at the Amsterdam club.

A host of clubs are now being linked with a move for the 19-year-old with Liverpool one of those mentioned.

However, The Echo understands that Klopp would rather prioritise other areas with Barcelona set to land De Ligt.

Liverpool might have found their own Matthijs de Ligt to play alongside Virgil van Dijk

Jurgen Klopp is happy with his centre-back options and isn't looking to strengthen his squad in that department.

Klopp's priorities this summer remain full-back cover and a versatile attacker to fill the gaps created by Alberto Moreno and Daniel Sturridge leaving when their contracts expire next month.

Nicol isn't convinced and thinks that Liverpool should revive their interest.

"I’ll tell you what, De Ligt and Van Dijk at any club would be arguably the best centre-back pairing in world football, no question," Nicol told ESPN FC.

“And absolutely Liverpool need to try and get somebody beside Van Dijk who is in his stratosphere.

“The thing is though, Gomez before he got injured was doing an excellent job but I’m not sure that he is going to get any better than he already is to be honest with you.

“So I think it would serve Liverpool well to go and get somebody beside Van Dijk who is tried and trusted.”
