Liverpool legend on why Tottenham must win at Anfield ahead of new Spurs stadium opening

They might not being going head-to-head until Sunday afternoon, but it seems that Tottenham’s trip to Liverpool is set to be the biggest game of the Premier League weekend.

Spurs are in the driving seat in the four-way battle royale to finish in the Champions League positions, sitting three points clear of Manchester United in fifth place.

Despite their league positioning, it has been a difficult run of late with Mauricio Pochettino’s side failing to win in any of their last four Premier League fixtures.

This weekend’s clash at Anfield is Tottenham’s last game before their eagerly-anticipated first match at the new Spurs stadium against Crystal Palace, and speaking on the Debate, Danny Mills and Phil Thompson said that it was imperative that the north London side secure Champions League football for the fans next term.

Asked if Sunday’s match was bigger for Spurs or title-challengers Liverpool, Mills said: “It’s difficult. Liverpool may be chasing Manchester City if they wn but for Tottenham it’d be very difficult to drop out of the top four. But do they need another defeat? That will be four out of five going into the new stadium.

New Spurs stadium: First test officially a success as club gets pass after meeting requirements

“Palace will raise their game. It’ll be a massive game for them as they’ll raise their game like they did at Wembley because it’s a new stadium for them as well. It’s a huge game for both.

“If Spurs were to drop out of the top four ahead of going into the new stadium it’s not a disaster, but no Champions League football next sseason would be a massive disappointment.”

Phil Thompson added: “It’s important for Spurs to just get out of that bit of a bad run. They’re a fantastic team, they’re a great team – they can play on their day and beat anybody.

Mauricio Pochettino reveals why he thinks Liverpool were proven right with one big decision

“There’s issues with those teams who are looking to play Champions League football. For Spurs, that stadium looks absolutely incredible. It’s 62,000 they keep telling us, they need to fill it with Champions League football and that brings its own bit of pressure.”
