Liverpool legend names Everton star who would solve key Anfield problem

Former Liverpool star Steve Nicol believes Everton's Abdoulaye Doucoure would solve a key problem for the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp has had to manage a handful of injuries in midfield as Naby Keita, James Milner, Fabinho and Thiago have all had spells on the sidelines in recent weeks.

Fabinho's absence was heavily felt at the weekend as Liverpool only managed a 2-2 draw against Brighton in the Premier League, despite being 2-0 up inside 15 minutes.

Both Thiago and Fabinho have returned and are in contention to face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night, but with one eye on the rest of the season, Nicol says the Reds need midfield reinforcements.

He said on ESPN FC : “It has been [chaos] recently [without Fabinho]. I wouldn’t have a problem if they can bring somebody in. There’s not that many going that are really good.

“The one problem Liverpool have right now is regardless of who they’re playing against, they’re getting at the back four.

"100 per cent I would take either [Declan Rice or Kalvin Phillips] of them.

“I’ll tell you what, I’d take Doucoure from Everton.”

Doucoure joined Everton from Watford in September 2020 but is also currently out with an injury.

The 28-year-old suffered a stress response in a bone against West Ham a couple of weeks ago.

But, he's had a positive start to the season under new manager Rafa Benitez with two goals and four assists in eight appearances for the Blues.
