Liverpool legend makes Anfield plea to supporters ahead of Everton clash

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has urged supporters not to flood Anfield if and when they seal the Premier League title.

The Reds are 25 points ahead of Manchester City in the race to be crowned champions, with only nine games remaining.

Liverpool could win the title as early as next weekend, if Manchester City lose against Arsenal on June 17 and the Reds beat Everton at Goodison Park the following Sunday.

There have already been security concerns about playing the match at Goodison Park, although the game will go ahead at Everton's home ground.

Thompson has urged all supporters to stay away from the ground and Anfield and prove football fans can be trusted, whenever Liverpool finally win the Premier League trophy.

"Although Liverpool have a fantastic record against Everton, it still doesn't matter," Thompson told Sky Sports.

"Every derby, I'm sure every Everton fan was looking forward to it. 'We're going to beat Liverpool this time', so it's built up that.

"That fan atmosphere at Goodison Park has been vital to Everton. I appeal to every Liverpool fan, no matter if or when Liverpool win the title, don't converge on Anfield.

"That has to be right and we have to all look at each other and go 'no'. We need people to look at us as supporters and say 'yes, you can trust us'."
