Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish reveals why winning trophies this season isn't important

Liverpool may well be fighting for domestic and European glory - but Anfield legend Kenny Dalglish doesn’t believe it’s vital that they finish the campaign with a trophy.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds are currently top of the Premier League, two points ahead of nearest rivals Manchester City who have played one game fewer.

The Anfield club are also in the Champions League quarter-finals, where they face a two-legged encounter with Portuguese giants Porto.

It’s certainly crunch time for Klopp and his squad as they look to finish the season with something to celebrate.

But Dalglish feels that Klopp can be happy with his achievements this season regardless of whether they secure glory or not.

He told Liverpool’s website : “Whether you win the title or you finish second, or you get progress in winning the Champions League or you don’t, I think the positivity in and around the place is brilliant and I think we really are stepping forward and getting closer and closer.

“We’re closer this year than we were last year, so that’s the most important thing.

“In the Champions League we got to the final last year and lost to Real Madrid , so maybe they’ll say ‘you’re only at the quarter-final stage so that’s not really progress, you’ve not got to the final yet or are not winning it’, but when you compare the progress from last year, you need to win it.

“So if you don’t win it, is that not progress? I think it’s still progress.”

The Reds return to action this weekend when they host top-four chasing Tottenham in a huge Premier League encounter at Anfield.
