Liverpool legend John Barnes tells of journey from hell after Madrid flight was cancelled

Former Liverpool player John Barnes has told the ECHO about his hellish journey to Madrid for the Champions League final.

The 55-year-old was speaking to our reporter Ellen Kirwin at the Fan Zone in the Spanish capital ahead of today's match at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium.

He told the ECHO how he had to leave his family and sleep outside a train station with homeless people.

He said: "I was with my family in Santorini, I had to be here at 8:30am on Thursday morning.

"My flight from Santorini got cancelled, so I then had to fly from Santorini to Athens, from Athens to Barcelona.

"Got to Barcelona 2am in the morning, my train, I had to get a train to Madrid, it was not until 5am, the train station is not open till 4am, from 2am until 4am I was lying on the floor outside the train station with a lot of homeless people before the train station opened.

"That's how committed I was to getting here."

He then made a jibe at former player Ian Rush, he said: "I am not going to mention any names, about other divas who played for Liverpool, my former teammates who would have wanted to be in a five star hotel.

"I slept on the floor of the train station for three hours, that is how much of a fan I am. I am not going to say who wouldn't have done it... Ian Rush... But apart from that, that is my commitment to the cause."

As well as promising fans a little rap, he also told the crowd the story, leading calling himself a 'man of the people' because he was prepared to 'slum it' for his team.

He also revealed that he won't be partying into the night if Liverpool take the tittle, saying that "those days are over".

He added: "What we learn at Liverpool is, it will be fantastic, we will enjoy it, but then what's next?

"What's next to make sure we are there again next season.

"So we are gonna celebrate, gave fun, but then we are going to be focused.

"We have to be focused about replicating that next season."
