Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher responds to Rangers transfer revelation

Jamie Carragher has responded to the revelation that former Rangers manager Ally McCoist attempted to sign the ex-Liverpool defender before he retired in 2013.

Carragher hung up his boots as a hero on Merseyside at the end of the 2012/13 season following a career which included his famous performance in the Reds ' Champions League final comeback win over AC Milan in 2005.

McCoist explained earlier on Tuesday that he tried to sign Carragher, with the latter featuring talkSPORT Drive in the evening discussing a multitude of topics. One of them was McCoist's admission, something which provided an interesting response from Carragher.

"I'm not sure I could have gone down (to a lower level), actually," Carragher told talkSPORT. "It wasn't until today that Ally McCoist revealed he tried to sign me at Rangers.

"That's the first time I've ever heard of anyone actually trying to sign me! I think he may have mentioned it to me when I'd finished but I didn't know how serious he was. I'm not sure I was rated too highly to go down the lower leagues. But in all seriousness, I don't think I would ever have gone down there."

"I always remember John Terry speaking to me about Bournemouth coming in for him. Now they weren't in the Championship. They were lower in the Premier League - but they conceded a lot of goals under Eddie Howe. They played some great football going forward but I always think, as a defender, you've got to be very careful.

"I think Rio (Ferdinand) found that when he went to QPR, that you haven't got that protection around you, you're not dominating games, you're not playing with better players.

"I think as a defender, you can look really exposed. So I think the clever and pragmatic decision was to finish at Liverpool and play a few games from the bench."
