Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher makes 'selfish' admission over next Spurs manager

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has admitted that he wants to see Antonio Conte back managing in the Premier League.

The Italian coach has reportedly been offered an 18-month contract at Tottenham, following Spurs’ decision to sack Nuno Espirito Santo on Monday. .

Conte guided Chelsea to the Premier League title in his first year in England, while most recently winning Serie A with Inter Milan last season, before leaving the role this summer.

Carragher has spoken of his admiration for the 52-year-old and revealed that he wants to see “a man of his calibre” back in the top-flight - but said it will be a tough task to transform Tottenham’s fortunes.

“I’ll be looking at that, if Conte comes into Tottenham, maybe from a selfish point of view in that I'd love Conte back in the Premier League,” the ex- Liverpool defender told Sky Sports.

“I think he was a revelation the first time round. He’s a brilliant character, his personality, I would love to see him back in the Premier League so I hope it does get done.

“I think a manager’s going to need more than 18 months to turn Tottenham around.

“Even though I’m a huge admirer of Antonio Conte and how quickly [he had success] with Chelsea and every club he’s been to, I think it will be very difficult to replicate that success in 18 months.”

Tottenham took the decision to part company with former Wolves boss Espiritio Santo after a 3-0 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday, leaving the club eighth in the table.

Having averaged less than a goal per game, only Norwich have scored fewer times than Spurs this season, despite having Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min to call upon.

It has been a steady fall from grace for Tottenham since facing Liverpool in the 2019 Champions League Final and the subsequent departure of Mauricio Pochettino as manager.

Carragher has said that Spurs could “certainly in the future” become contenders for the Champions League spots under Conte, but believes Espirito Santo was always in a precarious position, having not been first-choice for the job.

“It doesn’t seem right that a manager would lose his job so early into a season. 10 games is nothing at all but I think it was something that we all saw coming,” he said.

“I don’t think anybody felt at the time when Nuno got the Tottenham job that it was a perfect fit.

“I always thought it would be difficult for him to be there next season, I didn't envisage that it would happen so quickly.

“But there’s been some really bad results along with poor performances and it was something that you expected sooner rather than later.”
