Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher identifies when title pressure might hit Man City

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has spelled out what the Reds must do to throw title pressure back on Manchester City as the business end of the season ramps up.

Carragher’s former side can jump back above Man City this afternoon if they defeat Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.

Liverpool have gone from leading the league by seven points around the turn of the year to trailing by one point. But Liverpool have the mental advantage of playing first for the next few weeks before City meet Manchester United in their game in hand on Wednesday, April 24.

The pressure is on Liverpool right now as they face Spurs and Chelsea in the next couple of weeks but Carragher insists that if the Reds prevail in their next three games, the pressure could get to City after that.

City’s final five matches include facing Spurs and Manchester United and Carragher is hoping Liverpool can keep pace with the reigning champions until then.

“I don’t think anyone expected anything but Man City beating Fulham on Saturday. Now this is a big game for Liverpool against Spurs,” Carragher explained on Goals on Sunday.

Tottenham midfielder reveals details of letter sent to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard

“For Liverpool there are three really tough matches to come in Spurs, Southampton away on Friday night and Chelsea at home as well.

“After that you’re into the last four or five games of the season. The feeling is that whilst Man City are in pole position, if Liverpool can be just one point behind after these three games then it puts them in a great position to go on and win the league.

Jamie Carragher on how Man United hold key to Liverpool's title dream and why pressure is off Jurgen Klopp's side

“City’s games in the last five get harder and the pressures then become a lot tougher with the Champions League ties thrown in there.

“Liverpool have the tougher fixtures at the moment but if they can win them, it will throw the onus straight back on City.”

Mauricio Pochettino hits out at Liverpool and Tottenham comparison and explains why his side are different

Meanwhile, Carragher insists just the result and not the way Liverpool play is important against Spurs this afternoon.

“It’s about results and that is always more important than performances,” Carragher added. “Liverpool are coming back into form since the Bayern Munich win. We have seen that lift in certain games at home such as the victory against Burnley.”
