Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has hit out at Lord Alan Sugar for a tweet the businessman posted following the death of former Reds manager Gerard Houllier.
News of Houllier’s death at the age of 73 emerged on Monday, and Carragher soon paid tribute to the coach under whom he won an FA Cup, League Cup and Uefa Cup treble in 2000/01.
“Absolutely devastated by the news about Gerard Houllier,” Carragher wrote on Twitter.
“I was in touch with him only last month to arrange him coming to Liverpool.
“Loved that man to bits, he changed me as a person & as a player & got Liverpool back winning trophies. RIP Boss.”
Just a few minutes earlier, Carragher had taken exception to Lord Sugar’s response to Houllier’s death.
“Sad news on Gerard Houlier,” Sugar tweeted. “Nice fellow. I can imagine that Piers Morgan will devote half [of a] Good Morning Britain show telling every one how he knew him so well and go back ages.”
Carragher replied, “Delete this you f*****g idiot,” before retweeting former team-mate Dietmar Hamann’s own response to Sugar, which read: “You obviously didn’t know him otherwise you’d pay him the respect he deserved. One of the few gentleman in the football world, which can’t be said of yourself.”
Sugar later acknowledged that he had misspelled Houllier’s surname in his tweet, writing: “Sorry trolls I spelt his surname wrong.”
The businessman and media personality also responded to a user who had accused him of picking the wrong “time and place” to send his initial tweet, saying: “May I suggest you get a life, chill out see the truth and irony in my comment and mind your own bloody business.”
