Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher aims cheeky dig at Dominic Cummings

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has aimed a comical jibe at government adviser Dominic Cummings.

Boris Johnson's top aide caused widespread outrage last month when it was reported he drove 260 miles from his home in London to stay with family in Durham during lockdown.

Cummings, who strategically advises the Prime Minister, was also spotted at tourist destination Barnard Castle.

The beauty spot is a 60-mile round trip from Durham - a journey the 48-year-old claimed was taken in order to 'test his eyesight' after suffering from coronavirus symptoms.

When delivering a statement to the public last month, Cummings explained the reason for the trip after being spotted by members of the public, saying he was 'testing his eyesight' ahead of the long drive back to the capital.

His excuse has been mocked by many with Carragher making a subtle joke about it live on air on Wednesday morning.

Speaking on Sky Sports' Football Show, the Liverpool icon couldn't help himself when Charlton manager Lee Bowyer was reciting a story about an eye injury.

The ex-Leeds United midfielder was explaining a knock to his eye during his playing days which saw him temporarily lose his sight.

Bowyer said: "I couldn't see out of my eye. I was out for maybe eight-10 weeks.

"I just remember being on the floor and then the physio saying 'Are you okay?' I was like 'No'. I literally couldn't see out of my eye."

To which Carragher jokingly interrupted: "Did he tell you to go and drive your car to test your eyesight?"

His quick wit was met by laughter from fellow pundit Gary Neville as well as Bowyer himself and host Scott Minto.
