Liverpool legend delivers Steven Bergwijn verdict amid Tottenham's sensational start

It’d be fair to say that it’s been the perfect start to life in north London for Tottenham Hotspur's new manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

An impressive win at home to the reigning Premier League champions, followed by successive victories against Wolves and Watford sees Spurs top of the table, with a single league goal yet to be conceded.

Primarily, Nuno has been renowned to favour a 3-4-3 formation during his time in the West Midlands, but what’s been very apparent throughout pre-season and in the first three league games played is that his new team will usually operate in a 4-3-3.

Son Heung-Min has yet again illustrated his ability to influence games with crucial goals, netting against both Manchester City and Watford, but arguably the most impressive performer has been Dutch attacker Steven Bergwijn.

Whilst the 23-year-old left-winger is yet to acquire a goal so far, his ability to dribble past players with devastating pace and power has been key in opening up space for supporting teammates, particularly Sergio Reguilon, with the two appearing to strike an excellent partnership.

With Bergwijn naturally coming inside and onto his favoured right foot through the left, this has allowed Reguilon to attack the spaces on the outside with overlapping runs.

The performances Bergwijn has provided has left former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson impressed.

“I’ll tell you a player who has impressed me quite a little bit, is Bergwijn.’ Thompson said, speaking on the Where's Jeff? podcast.

He’s looking like the player Spurs thought they were getting. His performances these first three games, he’s really turned it on,”

Spurs fans will be interested to see how an attacking trio of Son, Kane, and Bergwijn fair in the near future, but on paper, it’s certainly a dynamic that will create all sorts of problems for opposing teams.
