Liverpool Ladies renamed as Liverpool FC Women ahead of new season

Liverpool's women's team will be known as 'Liverpool FC Women' from the new season ( Liverpool FC )

Liverpool have relaunched their women’s team as ‘Liverpool FC Women’ for the forthcoming season.

The Women’s Super League club, formerly known as Liverpool Ladies, become the fourth top-flight team to drop ‘Ladies’ from their name this summer.

Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham United have all announced similar rebrands ahead of the new WSL season.

Neil Redfearn, the recently-appointed Liverpool manager, welcomed the team’s change of name as a move towards a “more modern and inclusive game”.

“We are entering a new era for women’s football and this is an ideal time to review every aspect of our team, to ensure we are set up for future success,” he said.

“The renaming of my refreshed squad is just one aspect we’re looking at and fits perfectly with the overall move towards a more modern and inclusive game”

Peter Moore, chief executive of Liverpool, said: “I have witnessed women's football go from strength to strength over the last few years and I'm excited about this new stage in the game.

“We are in a prime position to be at the forefront of these changes, so it was an obvious choice to rename the squad before the new season starts.”

Two-time winners of the WSL, Liverpool were crowned champions in 2013 and 2014 but could only manage a sixth-place finish under former manager Scott Rodgers last term.

Redfearn’s squad has been overhauled since his appointment this summer, with major incomings and outgoing over the last two months.

Nine members of last season’s side - including captain Gemma Bonner - have left the club to be replaced by Leighanne Robe, Jasmine Matthew, Christie Murray and a raft of other new arrivals.
