Liverpool Labour councillor quits and another leaves the party

A Liverpool Labour councillor has resigned her position while another has left the party.

Croxteth Councillor Joann Kushner, who was first elected onto the city council in 2015, has resigned as a councillor.

The ECHO has seen correspondence from the Labour group's chief whip confirming the news.

Cllr Kushner - who is the wife of current cabinet member Barry Kushner - has not publicly given a reason for her decision to leave the council.

At the same time, fellow Croxteth Councillor Peter Mitchell has left the Labour Party, allowing his membership to lapse.

Cllr Mitchell, who has represented the Croxteth ward of the city since 2010, will continue as a councillor but will now sit as an Independent member.

Cllr Mitchell has been the subject of an administrative suspension by the Labour Party since 2019, with the party investigation allegations of sexual harassment.

He strongly refuted any allegations at the time his suspension was announced and said the move came as part of a 'vicious smear campaign' against him and others in his local Labour party.

The ECHO understands that Cllr Mitchell's case and the allegations against him are being looked at by the Labour Party's top officials - the National Constitutional Committee.

But he said today that he has had no contact and has not been asked any questions by the party since 2019.

He said he is so frustrated by the situation that he has decided to let his membership lapse and is now beginning legal action against the party.

Speaking to the ECHO he said: "I can confirm that my Labour Party membership has lapsed and that I have begun legal action against the Labour Party.

"It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time, but I look forward to continuing to serve the people of Croxteth as I have for the past 20 years."

Cllr Kushner could not be reached for a comment.

Today's news brings yet more turbulence for a Liverpool Labour Party that is continually engulfed with problems.

The party is still reeling from the arrest of Mayor Joe Anderson in December and has been scrambling to find a replacement mayoral candidate for this May's local elections.

But having selected a three-woman shortlist of Acting Mayor Wendy Simon, former Deputy Mayor Ann O'Byrne and Lord Mayor Anna Rothery, the process was plunged into chaos yesterday.

With ballots due to go out, Labour confirmed that the selection process had been delayed and that the three candidates would now be re-interviewed before voting can begin soon.

No reason has been given for this decision, with a party source saying it is due to 'unforeseen circumstances'.

The ECHO understands the new interviews are due to take place tomorrow.
