Liverpool know something went missing against Norwich - as Joe Gomez addresses Joel Matip battle

The scoreline suggested a trademark Anfield romp for Liverpool in their Premier League opener - but Jurgen Klopp's players weren't fooled.

The Reds began their top-flight campaign with a 4-1 win over newly-promoted Norwich City on Friday evening.

Four goals before half-time was an early statement of intent in what is likely to be another titanic battle to depose Manchester City as champions.

Norwich, though, were not without their chances during the opening period, with Liverpool far more open in midfield and defence than they were for much of the previous campaign.

And Jordan Henderson admits a lack of control is something Klopp's side need to work on.

"It was the start of the Premier League, we wanted to go out and start really well, which we managed to do," the Reds skipper told Liverpoolfc.com.

"We scored some brilliant goals and played well in the first half. In the second half we created some chances, but could have controlled the game a little bit better.

"There's still improvement (to be made) but overall we're delighted with the result and performance.

"It wasn't so much defensively, we gave the ball away sloppy at times and we didn't control the game with the ball, so in the transition we weren't in great positions. That's one thing we can improve on.

"But it's the first game of the season – there's going to be things that we need to improve on, look back on and work on. That's only a positive for us.

"We'll learn from it and want to improve in the next one."

Norwich netted a deserved consolation through Teemu Pukki in the second half, and Joe Gomez admits the visitors caused Liverpool some problems.

"We didn't underestimate them at all," he said to Sky Sports. "We knew they'd come here to play football, the manager warned us about that, and they got behind us a few times.

"It was frustrating to concede the goal but we have to learn from it and progress."

Gomez was again preferred to Joel Matip as centre-back partner to Virgil van Dijk.

But he said: "Nothing's been said (about who's first choice). Every week we have to play for our place, none of us are guaranteed a place in the starting XI."
