Graham Carter has opened up on the “overwhelming” reaction he has received following his decision to leave Liverpool.
The long-serving kit-man has called time on his time at Anfield to retire, after spending more than 35 years with the club.
He initially started working for the club in the 1970s as a coach driver, before taking on the role full-time in 1965.
Then in 1999 Carter became part of the team at Melwood under Gerard Houllier, and has been a much loved member of the club ever since.
Sunday’s win over Crystal Palace was Carter’s final Liverpool game before his retirement, and after the full-time whistle the players gave him a guard of honour.
Manager Jurgen Klopp and captain Jordan Henderson have spoke at length about how much they will miss Carter, and he himself admits to being “overwhelmed” that day.
“It was surreal. It was strange working,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.
“It was only when I read the programme – I normally get to the ground early and I was reading the programme – and I read the boss’ notes and Jordan Henderson’s notes, all praising me. Just overwhelming.
“I’m thankful for everything the club has done for me, I’ve really enjoyed my time here but now is the time for me to leave and enjoy myself with my family.”
Carter also went on to say when he made the decision to retire, and the reason why he decided the time was right to leave Liverpool.
“The decision was made about halfway through this season,” Carter added. “I went to see Ray [Haughan], who is my line manager, and then the boss and said, ‘It’s time for me to go.’
“I had a health issue in the beginning of last year and I was off for seven months and I just decided then it’s time for me to leave to spend some time with the grandkids and the family.
“[LFC] changed my life altogether because I was just a coach driver. All of a sudden I’m a coach driver for Liverpool and then I get the job as a kit man.
“I’ve had a good life out of it, I’ve made a good living here and I’ve enjoyed it here. To do all that and enjoy what you’re doing as well is brilliant.”
