Liverpool keeper backs CCTV appeal issued over city centre attack on him and his brother

Liverpool U23s keeper Shamal George has backed a fresh appeal for information after he was attacked in a city bar.

Merseyside Police today issued CCTV images of a man they "wish to speak to" in connection with the force's investigation into the incident.

Mr George and his brother both suffered facial injuries after being assaulted in Liverpool city centre in the early hours of Saturday, March 9.

Officers were called to Red Door, on Berry Street, shortly after 2am to reports a 28-year-old man had been attacked in the bar.

It was also reported a 21-year-old man - now known to be the talented goalkeeper - was then assaulted outside the premises.

Both were left with cuts to the face that led to them seeking an assessment at hospital.

In the aftermath of the incident, Liverpool FC urged anyone with information to contact investigating officers.

A club spokesman said: " Liverpool Football Club is shocked and appalled that Shamal and a family member have been subjected to such a terrible ordeal.

"As a club, we will offer Shamal and his family any support that they require.

"The matter is now in the hands of Merseyside Police and we will defer all enquiries to them.

"We would also urge anyone with information about the incident to come forward."

In an updated appeal, released this afternoon, Merseyside Police issued CCTV of a man they said they would like to speak to as they continue the probe into the incident.

The appeal said: "The man we wish to speak to is described as a white man, of stocky build wearing a white t-shirt, with a large tattoo on his right forearm.  An investigation is ongoing and officers are exploring potential CCTV opportunities."

Mr George shared the appeal on Twitter, writing: "If anyone knows anything please let me or the police know. Thank you."

The Wirral-born star, a Liverpool fan since childhood , has had loan spells at Carlisle and Tranmere Rovers and now plays for the Reds' under 23s.

Fans among his 17,000 followers immediately shared his appeal, with his tweet receiving the backing of hundreds of supporters within minutes of being posted.

Several offered their support for the promising goalkeeper, saying they hoped he and his brother were OK.
