Liverpool keeper Adrian turned down West Ham contract before Super Cup heroics against Chelsea

West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini wanted to keep former number two goalkeeper Adrian at the club this season but the Spaniard rejected the club's advances before becoming a free agent.

The Spanish keeper wanted a number one spot on a team and chose to leave West Ham having rejected a contract offer from Maneul Pellegrini before the end of the 2018/19 campaign to stay with the club and battle Lukasz Fabianski for the jersey.

Adrian wasn't having though and departed the club. He got a fantastic send off from the Hammers supporters on the final ay of last season following the win over Watford at Vicarage Road in recognition for what he did for the club during his 15 appearances in east London.

After struggling to find a club to take him on as a first choice stopper this summer, Liverpool came calling after selling their number two Simon Mignolet to Club Brugge.

Jurgen Klopp's Champions League winners swooped in and plucked Adrian from the free agent market and the Spaniard saved a penalty s they won the Super Cup on Wednesday night against Chelsea in Istanbul.

An injury suffered to number one keeper Allisson saw Klopp forced to turn to Adrian and the Spaniard has already helped his new side to lifting a trophy, saving Tammy Abraham's crucial spot kick in Turkey after the match finished 2-2 at the end of extra time.

Hammers manager Pellegrini was keen to see Adrian stay but alas, it turned out otherwise and the manager revealed he didn't have much input in Adrian's exit as he wanted the player to stay at the club.

The Chilean said: "The different things why he did not continue here, you must ask him, his agent or the sporting director.

"He was always a player who was positive and committed to this club. I am happy for him.

"It is difficult for me to talk about something I was not involved in. We offered Adrian to stay here to improve his contract.

"They did not find an arrangement. From both sides there were different reasons."
