Liverpool Jordan Henderson on how 'new signing' Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will show what he's capable of this season

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has described Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as a new signing for the Reds and hopes the midfielder can show what he was capable of.

Speaking ahead of his side's opening game of the US tour against Borussia Dortmund in the early hours of Saturday morning, the England star explained how his fellow midfielder played an important part in the side's Champions League victory despite being injured and is ready to take on a more starring role in the team.

Henderson said: "He played big part for us behind the scenes last season even though he was injured, always positive and this season I hope he plays a massive part on the field and shows what he’s capable of.

"He's a fantastic person off the field and I'm sure he's been through some painful times but he was always there to support us.

"This pre season is important for him to get back to fitness and he’s been flying so far to be fair, he gives us something different and is like a new signing for us, hopefully he can keep stay injury free and he deserves a break."

Fans have seen Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain stepping up his preparations ahead of the new football season and will add even more depth to a midfield that also includes, Henderson as well as Gini wijnaldum, Fabinho, James Milner, Naby Keita and Adam Lallana.

Liverpool will first face Klopp's former side Dortmund on Saturday for the fourth time since taking charge of the Reds.

The two teams met in America last year during the International Champions Cup, with the German giants claiming a 3-1 triumph. Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring, though a Christian Pulisic brace and Jacob Larsen injury-time strike handed Dortmund the win.
