Liverpool's John Lennon Airport has been closed and flights cancelled after a private plane came off the runway.

Four people were on board the aircraft when it overshot the runway but were not injured, an airport spokesman said.

Emergency services were called at 6am and an investigation is underway.

The airport is expected to remain closed until this afternoon.

On Twitter, Liverpool Airport said passengers should check with their airline about their journey.

"The airport is currently closed, please contact your airline for any further information on your flight," a spokesman said.

"We will update you as soon as we have more information."

Flights arriving from Salzburg, where Liverpool FC played on Tuesday night, the Isle of Man and Dublin were diverted to Manchester on Wednesday morning, while planes from Belfast and Amsterdam were cancelled.

Travellers took to social media to warn others about the delay they were experiencing.

One Twitter user said: "Flight has been delayed by 4 hours at John Lennon airport as a plane has overshot the runway, all flights delayed."
