Liverpool have welcomed the Government's announcement regarding the proposed return of fans into sports stadiums next month.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson yesterday announced the Government's winter plan aimed at dealing with the coronavirus pandemic over the course of the next few months.
Part of that plan will see sports fans allowed to return to indoor arenas and outdoor stadiums in reduced capacities, but only if the respective area falls into a Tier One or Tier Two category.
If the stadium in question falls in a Tier One area, 4,000 fans will be allowed to return, or up to 50 percent of the stadium’s capacity, depending which figure is lower.
In Tier Two, 2,000 fans will be allowed to attend matches, or once again up to 50 percent of the stadium’s capacity, with it once again depending which figure is lower.
It's anticipated that the composition of the tiers will be announced on Thursday, with current hopes that the Liverpool City Region would be placed into Tier 2.
That could potentially allow a number of supporters back into Anfield in time for Liverpool 's Premier League match against Wolves on December 5.
And the Reds have confirmed that they will work with their city partners, including Liverpool City Council, Merseyside Police and Spirit of Shankly, in order to establish the most up-to-date health guidance and the most effective process for the safe return of supporters.
“Liverpool Football Club welcomes the government's announcement regarding the proposed return of fans into sports stadia. We have greatly missed our supporters at Anfield and we look forward to welcoming them back when it is safe to do so,” a statement from the club read.
“We will continue to work with our city partners, including Liverpool City Council, Merseyside Police and Spirit of Shankly, in order to establish the most up-to-date health guidance and the most effective process for the safe return of supporters.
“While we await confirmation of which tier the city of Liverpool will be placed in, we continue to work through our plans and will make further announcements in due course.”
Speaking to the House of Commons, the Prime Minister said on Monday: "In Tier 1 and Tier 2 spectator sports and business events will be free to resume inside and outside with capacity limits and social distancing providing more consistencies with theatres and concerts."
