Liverpool issue Joel Matip injury update ahead of visit to Man Utd

Liverpool defender Joel Matip has returned to training ahead of the Reds' trip to Manchester United on Sunday.

The Cameroonian centre-back missed the Reds' last two matches against Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League and Leicester City in the Premier League having sustained a knock in the 1-0 win at Sheffield United last month.

Jurgen Klopp turned to Joe Gomez to partner Virgil van Dijk against Salzburg, with Dejan Lovren coming in to face Leicester and impressing up against Jamie Vardy .

But Matip now seems set to rekindle his partnership with Van Dijk, a pairing that helped the Reds to Champions League glory last season.

"Joel Matip resumed training at Melwood on Tuesday morning after recovering from a knock sustained prior to the international break," said Liverpool on their website .

"The issue, picked up during the 1-0 win at Sheffield United on September 28, ruled the centre-back out of the Reds' meetings with FC Salzburg and Leicester City.

"However, Matip took part in this morning's session alongside his teammates as Jurgen Klopp's side get ready for Sunday's trip to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United ."

Prior to the injury Matip had been hugely impressive form and picked up the PFA Premier League Player of the Month award for September .

The 2016 free transfer arrival from Schalke has risen up the pecking order at Anfield in the past year, and is now considered as Van Dijk's first-choice partner.

"In a world of big transfer fees, to sign a player like Joel Matip on a free transfer is incredible," said Klopp recently.

"It was maybe one of the best pieces of business we did in the last few years.

"Joel is in a really good moment and long may it continue."
