Liverpool 'invite Canadian teen to training' as clubs circle for his signature

Canadian starlet Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty has been training with Liverpool as clubs circle for the signature, the ECHO understands.

The 17-year-old right winger is an exciting youth prospect, currently making a name for himself at MLS side Toronto FC.

Marshall-Rutty signed a first-team contract at the North American club at the age of 15 in January 2020 and made his debut as a substitute later that year, becoming the youngest-ever player to represent the team.

He made 11 appearances in the MLS in the 2021 campaign and is now expected to tour a number of clubs in the off-season.

The youngster has already been pictured training with Arsenal this week.

But Anfield sources made no denial of suggestions they have been taking a closer look at him too.

Liverpool may have to remain patient should they target a deal for Marshall-Rutty, however, as Premier League and EFL clubs are no longer able to sign overseas players until they reach the age of 18.

The sought-after teenager could become the latest Canadian star to make a name for himself after the likes of Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies and Lille forward Jonathan David.

Marshall-Rutty received his first call-up to the senior national team in January, though is still waiting to make his maiden appearance.

A recent report from MLS Soccer also indicated the teen has been training with Liverpool, and added: "European interest in the wonderkid is plentiful, including from UEFA Champions League clubs."
