Liverpool 'interested' in signing Manchester United top target Frenkie De Jong

Liverpool are reportedly "interested" in signing unsettled Barcelona star Frenkie De Jong as part of a midfield rebuild under Jurgen Klopp.

The Dutchman was the number one target for Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag in the summer and even got as far as agreeing a fee with the Spanish club, but De Jong wanted to remain at Barcelona.

De Jong is said to be "unhappy" with the way the Catalan side have treated him after he decided to stay at the club and has found himself on the bench a number of times under boss Xavi.

With the hunt for a midfielder continuing after interest in signing Aurelien Tchouameni in the summer eventually leading to bringing in Arthur Melo on deadline day, Fichajes are reporting Liverpool are interested in De Jong.

With new signing Arthur now injured for around four months, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool look for extra midfield reinforcement in the January transfer window.

Klopp is said to be a "massive admirer" of 25-year-old De Jong and is reportedly keen on bringing his athleticism and dynamism to Anfield, but United are likely to put up stiff competition for any other suitors.
