Liverpool injury update as Virgil van Dijk leaves hospital on crutches

Virgil van Dijk left hospital on crutches with Liverpool fearing the defender faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Van Dijk underwent scans on a suspected knee injury sustained when the victim of a horror challenge by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford during Saturday’s 2-2 Merseyside derby draw at Goodison.

The Dutchman had lengthy treatment on the field before limping off after only 11 minutes, with VAR opting not to punish Pickford for the X-rated tackle given Van Dijk had been adjudged offside in the build-up.

While there have been rumours regarding the severity of the damage to the player’s right knee, Liverpool are still waiting on the results of the scans.

But the Reds are fearful Van Dijk – who has not missed a Premier League game since January 2018 – could be out for a significant period.

The Reds are also awaiting news from scans on Thiago Alcantara after the midfielder was fouled late on by Everton forward Richarlison, who was subsequently given a straight red card.

Thiago played the remaining minutes but complained of discomfort after the final whistle, and has reportedly suffered swelling to his right knee.

Both players are major doubts for Liverpool’s Champions League group opener against Ajax in Holland on Wednesday.
