Liverpool injury, suspension list: Team news and predicted line-up vs Crystal Palace

Georginio Wijnaldum could be a surprise inclusion in the Liverpool squad to face Crystal Palace after making good progress in his recovery from a knee injury.

The Dutchman was declared a doubt for Saturday’s fixture having sustained a knock during the Reds’ 1-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion last weekend.

But, speaking at his press conference to preview the game, Klopp revealed that Wijnaldum will be closely monitored as he pushes to recover in time to feature.

The Liverpool boss also offered an optimistic prognosis on Trent Alexander-Arnold, who also picked up a knee problem during last week’s trip to the south coast.

However, Standard Sport understands that the Scouse defender is still likely to be around three weeks from returning, despite his reputation as a fast healer at Melwood.

Klopp said: “Gini and Trent we will decide day-by-day. It’s not good of course, but the exceptional part of that story is that they both played 90 minutes [v Brighton].

“The whole world saw what happened to Trent, what a boy, unbelievable! He played that game, then we got information that he had pain after the game.

“Nothing happened during the game, it’s just what happened before. Adrenaline is an interesting thing!

“We will see. For both it will be really close for tomorrow. I don’t want to close any doors before anybody tells me we have to close them.”

Liverpool’s defensive crisis recently eased with the return to training of Joel Matip, who is tipped to start alongside Virgil van Dijk in central defence on Saturday.

However, Dejan Lovren and Joe Gomez are set to remain sidelined until the visit of Leicester City to Anfield on January 30 at least.

Klopp did, though, provide a positive update on Adam Lallana, who has struggled with a muscle issue of late.

He added: “Dejan is much better than he was but it’s a muscle thing and he needs time. He can be involved again I’m pretty sure against Leicester.

“Adam trained yesterday and the day before so should be in contention. We have to see how he reacts to the sessions.

“Joe Gomez, no. Improving, improving, improving. We hope it will be quick from now on, but we do not know exactly.

“Joel has trained for around 10 days, which is good, and the others are long term.”

Probable XI: Alisson, Milner, Van Dijk, Matip, Robertson, Fabinho, Henderson, Shaqiri, Salah, Mane, Firmino.
