Liverpool injury latest and team news ahead of Manchester City clash

Manchester City head to Anfield without three key players for their clash with Liverpool.

Pep Guardiola confirmed that Sergio Aguero, Kevin de Bruyne and Nathan Ake are all unavailable but otherwise, City have a full complement of players.

For Liverpool, though, they remain have depleted without three of their first-choice centre-backs.

Here's a full rundown of their injury list and expected return dates ahead of Sunday's clash.

Sadio Mane

Sadio Mane missed Liverpool's trip to West Ham with what Jurgen Klopp called a 'minor muscle injury', and was absent again against Brighton.

What Klopp said : "Sadio we will see. He might be available for the weekend. He didn't train with the team today. Maybe, we will see."

On Friday, Klopp added: "Sadio and Fabinho can train later today, we will see."

Expected return date: February 7.

Alisson

The Reds keeper missed out on the defeat to Brighton through illness, though Klopp confirmed that it was COVID-19 related.

However, the goalkeeper is expected to return in goal at Anfield on Sunday to face Man City.

What Klopp said : "Ali is much better, good enough to train individual session."

Expected return date: December 7

Fabinho

Fabinho has missed Liverpool's last three matches but returned to training late this week and could be in line to return at centre-back after a muscle injury.

What Klopp said: "Minor issues nowadays are at least three games, it depends could be four games as well so we have to see. I think the game where Fab could be back is City."

Expected return date: February 7

Joel Matip

Joel Matip was ruled out for the remainder of the season on Tuesday after injuring himself against Tottenham.

The club confirmed Matip had suffered ankle ligament damage and won't play again this season.

What Klopp said: “We will wait for him. He has now the rest of this season, then the summer, then the pre-season to get ready again and he will be ready again.”

Expected return date: Next season.

Naby Keita

Keita hasn't featured since Liverpool's 7-0 win at Crystal Palace on December 19 after picking up a muscle problem.

The Guinea international started the first four Premier League games of the season but has since been restricted to just five outings in all competitions due to a run of injuries.

What Klopp said: “Naby is not ready for involvement.

"It’s not a big thing; it’s a little bit like with other players in the past when they came back from injuries and then because of the amount of games and situation in the squad they had to play.

“Then a little injury happened again. Now we just had to put on the brake and say ‘let’s settle it properly’.

"In the moment we have alternatives in midfield, so we really try to give him all the time he needs to get 100% fit."

Expected return date: Unknown.

Diogo Jota

Jota is expected to be back in mid-February after suffering a knee injury in early December.

The Portuguese international was expected to be out for two months and has been absent since early December.

What Klopp said: "Diogo is, I don't know exactly, a couple of weeks [away], two, three, four, I am not sure."

Expected return date: March

Joe Gomez

Gomez underwent a successful operation to repair tendon damage after suffering a significant injury during training with England back in November.

What Klopp said: “[It is] a tough one but the surgery was successful, so he is now already recovering first from the surgery and then starting the rehabilitation.

“He is with his family, so he is in the best possible place I would say. That’s it, pretty much. Rehab has started now.

"After surgery, you count from that moment backwards and we help as much as we can, but for the first few days all of the boys after surgery probably feel pretty alone.

"But when you have your family around – and that’s the case for him – then it’s as good as possible, that’s it.”

Expected return date: Next season

Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool have been without their star centre-back since mid-October and Klopp provided an update on his condition earlier this week.

The Liverpool boss admitted, though Van Dijk is making good progress, it remains unlikely he will play again this season.

What Klopp said: "At the moment, nobody, no doctor has told me there's a chance for Virgil to play in this season again.

"I don't want to say it is absolutely impossible, but it is not likely. It's not likely and we don't have to discuss these things really."

Expected return date: Next season
