Liverpool injury crisis underlined as alarming starting line-up emerges

It's unlikely Liverpool will have suffered another injury blow by the time you finish reading this sentence.

But it wouldn't come as a complete surprise.

The Reds have suffered a host of fitness setbacks since they were crowned Premier League champions back in July.

A short pre-season, a lack of proper preparation, the intense fixture list, a condensed campaign, the spread of coronavirus and additional international games have all combined to give Jurgen Klopp some major problems.

What also hasn't helped is the longer the absentee list, the great the onus has become on those available, thus making them more susceptible to fatigue and, as a consequence, injuries of their own.

And there have been sufficient Liverpool players missing at just the eight-game mark of the Premier League season to create an entire starting XI.

Goalkeeper: Alisson Becker

Alisson missed three games in October - including the 7-2 defeat at Aston Villa - after hurting his shoulder in a collision with a team-mate during training.

Defenders: Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip

Van Dijk is unlikely to play again this season having suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage when on the receiving end of a horror challenge from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford last month. Matip, who went into the season seeking to regain match sharpness after a foot problem, recently missed five games with a muscle problem. Gomez, meanwhile, has undergone surgery on a tendon in his knee and will be out for a significant period.

Right wing-back: Trent Alexander-Arnold

Alexander-Arnold is expected to be out for at least four weeks having suffered a calf complaint during the second half of Sunday's 1-1 draw at Manchester City.

Left wing-back: Kostas Tsimikas

The new signing had made just one appearance before sitting out eight games with a thigh problem. He returned to action last week.

Midfielders: Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita, Fabinho

Keita returned last week having missed five games, while Fabinho has sat out the last three with the hamstring issue that forced him off in the Champions League game against FC Midtjylland.

Thiago, meanwhile, has featured for just 135 minutes this term following a positive coronavirus test and the knee injury sustained by the red-card tackle by Everton striker Richarlison.

Forwards: Sadio Mane, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Mane missed the defeat as Aston Villa while self-isolating after a positive coronavirus test. Oxlade-Chamberlain, meanwhile, hasn't played this season after suffering a knee injury during training in August.
