Liverpool injury blow hands Takehiro Tomiyasu huge Arsenal tactical boost ahead of top-four test

Arsenal’s trip to Liverpool after the last international break of the year will be the biggest test since the unbeaten run began with the 1-0 victory over Norwich City in September.

Arsenal have beaten some tough opponents during their ten matches including Leicester City away from home, Aston Villa and a characteristically challenging trip to Turf Moor.

However, with just over a week until the Gunners travel to Anfield, Arteta has been given a big boost in the form of a Liverpool injury concern ahead of the journey, courtesy of the international break claiming one of the Reds' star players.

Sadio Mane was playing for Senegal in a World Cup qualifier against Togo but was forced off after a collision with an opposition defender just 28 minutes into the clash.

Senegal went on to draw the match 1-1, the first game they have failed to win in their group so far -highlighting Mane's importance. They still sit top of Group H, a group that includes the aforementioned Togo plus Namibia and Congo.

Liverpool will now be sweating on the fitness of the winger with such a crucial game after the break concludes.

The Reds have dropped points in their last two matches drawing 2-2 at Anfield against Brighton before losing 3-2 at the London Stadium versus West Ham United.

With the Senegalese wide man set to operate on the left-wing, Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu will be hoping Jurgen Klopp is forced into choosing a secondary option.

The likelihood, with Roberto Firmino also injured, is that Diogo Jota will be moved to the left-wing and Divock Origi, who scored in his last appearance, will deputise centrally.

Mohamed Salah’s fitness remains 100% barring any issues whilst playing for Egypt in the next few days.

Arteta has a huge decision with who to combat arguably the world’s current best player with both Nuno Tavares and Kieran Tierney now available for selection.

Tavares has played whilst the Scot has been out injured and shone in all three league starts. However, Tierney remains one of Arsenal’s best players and has considerably more experience playing in England’s topflight and in particular against Salah.

However, the option for a back three could now be considered more attractive to use both players to combat Salah and the supporting Trent Alexander -Arnold.

With Liverpool left hamstrung by Mane’s possible absence, more resources can be afforded to suffocate the effectiveness of Salah.

A full assessment of the extent of Mane’s injury is needed but the Gunners fans and staff will be hoping he will not be present for Saturday’s match.
