Liverpool 'in the race' for £90m pair as German club director makes transfer admission

The director of German club Borussia Mönchengladbach has admitted the club made need to sell players in the summer, amid reported interest from Liverpool in two of their star names.

The Reds have been tentatively linked with a move for midfielder Denis Zakaria and striker Marcus Thuram ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Metro cite SportBild as saying that Liverpool are battling it out with arch rivals Manchester United for £45m-rated Zakaria's signature and that the Reds “are firmly in the race” to land him having been “courting” the 23-year-old this term.

It has also been claimed by De Express that Jurgen Klopp’s side are also interested in Thuram, who would cost no more than 50m euros (£43-44m).

The suspension caused by the coronavirus suspension is affecting clubs across the whole of Europe, with some struggling to cope financially with the lack of income from matches, televised games and sponsorships.

Even though both players would cost close to £90m this summer, comments made by Mönchengladbach director Max Eberl could see clubs try and make a move for the duo.

“We have no risk of bankruptcy or the like,” Eberl told De Express.

“Of course, we also have to try to make up for the deficits of millions.

"It will be the case that this club will continue to exist in the future.”

Zakaria has been capped 24 times for the Switzerland national team, and primarily operates as a defensive midfielder, but can also feature at centre-back.

While Thuram is a striker who is capable of featuring on either wing.
