Liverpool in talks with Sporting over Rafael Camacho but Bruno Fernandes not a target

Liverpool are in talks with Sporting over a deal for wantaway youngster Rafael Camacho.

The 19-year-old, who joined the Reds academy after being released by Manchester City in 2016, is ready to depart Anfield for regular first-team football this summer.

And Sporting are keen to bring back a player who started out in their youth setup before heading to England six years ago.

Camacho’s hometown club initially expressed an interest in acquiring his services back in January.

But Jurgen Klopp’s reluctance to lose another right-back option following the loan departure of Nathaniel Clyne to Bournemouth scuppered any chance of a deal.

Camacho went on to make his first-team debut in that position as the Reds suffered a 2-1 defeat at Wolves in the FA Cup third round.

And the teenager made his Premier League bow just 12 days later, featuring as a substitute in a 4-3 win over Crystal Palace at Anfield.

However, those proved to be his only two outings of the 2018-19 season.

Dialogue between the two clubs has continued since that January deal failed to come to fruition, and Sporting are hopeful of finally getting their man this summer.

The Portuguese club’s hopes appear to have been boosted by Camacho’s reluctance to extend a contract that has just one year remaining, though Liverpool’s stance on his valuation is unlikely to soften.

It has been suggested that Camacho could be used as a makeweight in a deal to bring Sporting’s coveted attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes to Anfield.

However, Standard Sport understands that the Reds have no plans to sign the 24-year-old, who is reportedly a target for Manchester United.
