Liverpool are lining up an Anfield friendly against Aston Villa or Newcastle United as part of their pre-season preparations.
The Reds are keen to face top-level opposition before the Premier League season starts on August 14 with a trip to promoted Norwich City.
Talks had been held with Spanish side Osasuna over a match at Anfield but challenges regarding an overseas team being allowed into England at present scotched any such proposal.
Liverpool have instead investigated arranging at least one fixture against a Premier League side ahead of the new campaign.
And they are now hopeful of hosting Villa or Newcastle in early August as the culmination of their warm-up programme.
Liverpool were keen to avoid facing any Premier League team they are due to play during the early stages of the season, and with fixtures against Villa and Newcastle not scheduled until December, they are considered ideal opposition.
The Reds had previously explored the possibility of a summer double-header against Manchester United, which then became a single game at Old Trafford.
It was agreed in principle until events surrounding the postponed Premier League clash between the clubs in May meant the friendly was scrapped.
The majority of Liverpool's squad return for pre-season training on July 12, although those who have featured in Euro 2020 or the Copa America will be given extra time off.
Jurgen Klopp will take his squad abroad for a training camp this summer where a number of friendlies will be arranged. Austria, Spain, Portugal and France are all under discussion as possible venues.
