Liverpool in list of 'worst areas' for drivers being on phones behind the wheel

Liverpool drivers are among the worst in the country for driving fines, with a massive £1.5m worth handed out in the last five years.

Our region's drivers received some of the most fines in the UK for driving while using a mobile phone.

A new report from GoCompare has shown which parts of the UK are hotspots for Brits’ being fined at at the wheel.

And according to the data, Liverpool is ranked sixth worst, following behind Cheshire and London.

According to police reports from the past five years, the winter season holds the highest ranking for fines throughout the year at at 42,099 across December & January.

Of these fines, a staggering £1,522,200 worth were issued in Liverpool between 2015 and 2020.

London ranked first with £10,757,800 issued in fines by local law enforcement. While Northern Ireland ranked second with £3,246,600 in fines and Essex followed in third with fines reaching a total of £2,611,200.

Ranking at 20th, the South-Eastern areas of Devon and Cornwall had fewer fines causing drivers to fork out just £458,300.

Although, the number of mobile-related fines has reduced from 5,316 in January 2015 to 911 in the same month in 2020, this year's new restrictions look to bring this figure down further.

This will ban the use of mobile phones when driving completely, including touching the screen to change music and use the Sat Nav.

The price comparison website's study analysed FOI data from police forces across the UK to find which areas are reporting the most police fines, and accidents, related to using a mobile whilst driving.

Mark Greening, Driving Expert at GoCompare, pulled together his top tips for drivers who regularly use their phones for sat nav and music whilst travelling.

He said: "With new legislation coming into effect, it is vital for drivers to be more careful when driving to avoid fines and, most importantly, stay safe on the roads. This year will see new legislation passed that bans any use of mobile phones at the wheel.

“This new driving law aims to reduce accidents occurring due drivers using mobiles at the wheel. Drivers are still using phones at wheel and, as our study shows, fines are highest in the winter months - totalling more than 40k worth of fines across the UK.

“So we need to make sure drivers are aware of the new ban to reduce fines, and keep roads safe for both pedestrians and other drivers. This can be done by applying safety add ons to your mobile phone before driving.

"Some Sat Nav apps such as ‘Waze’ allow you to automatically turn on the Do Not Disturb feature when driving. This will prevent you from having to answer phone calls and checking your phone at the wheel.

"You can also set your phone to Do Not Disturb or Airplane mode when driving without using an app. This will prevent you from being fined as well as increase safety for all road users.”
