Liverpool in danger of lightning striking twice as latest transfer target is identified

Liverpool are in danger of seeing lightning strike twice this transfer window as Jamal Lewis becomes the club's latest target.

So far this summer Jurgen Klopp's Reds have been linked with Timo Werner, Thiago Alcantara, Ismaila Sarr and Lewis.

Germany international Werner appeared certain to sign for Liverpool this month, with the Anfield club his desired destination.

But due to the coronavirus pandemic causing financial uncertainty on Merseyside, Liverpool were forced to back out of the transfer, paving the way for Chelsea to pounce.

In the end, Frank Lampard's Blues snapped up the striker for £50million.

Since Werner, Thiago has emerged at the top of the Reds' wishlist, with Liverpool looking to pay around £20m for the midfielder, and Bayern Munich wanting around £40m to sell.

Speculation linking the Spaniard to Liverpool has since gone cold.

In recent weeks, the two names at the top of Klopp's wishlist are Sarr and Lewis.

But in the same way with Werner - and potentially Thiago - Liverpool are in real danger of missing out on snapping up the full-back.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool are only prepared to pay £8m plus £2m in add-ons. Norwich value the player at more than double this amount.

Unless the Canaries relax their asking price, which seems unlikely after they saw Man City pay £40m for Nathan Ake from Bournemouth, then Liverpool are in real danger of missing out.

Klopp has previously said he is happy with the squad at his disposal, and why wouldn't he be, Liverpool are the current Champions League and Premier League holders.

But the Reds' squad is relatively small, and should Liverpool suffer with injuries in key areas next season, it could hinder their hopes of retaining their title.
