Liverpool hoping for Xherdan Shaqiri fitness boost on Melwood training return

Jurgen Klopp will hope to receive a fitness boost from Xherdan Shaqiri when Liverpool’s first-team squad return to Melwood on Wednesday.

The Reds will resume training in small groups tomorrow as phase one of the Premier League’s bid to complete the 2019/20 season gets under way.

For the club’s medical staff, that means a first opportunity to assess the players’ fitness since the campaign was suspended in March.

This evaluation will be particularly crucial for Shaqiri, who has been following the final stages of a rehabilitation programme during the enforced break.

A muscle issue has kept the Swiss sidelined since he featured as an 89th-minute substitute in a 1-0 win over Tottenham in January.

It is hoped that he will be ready to return to action for the final nine games of a season that has been delayed by coronavirus.

However, whether that is possible will only become clear when the Reds’ physios are able to make a full assessment starting from tomorrow.

Injuries have restricted Shaqiri to just 10 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions so far this season.

That lack of match action prompted interest in the 28-year-old from both AS Roma and Sevilla during the January transfer window.

The Reds rejected approaches from both clubs, but indicated that a deal worth around €30million (£26.9m) would be a possibility this summer.

However, it remains to be seen whether the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic impacts that price tag, or indeed the Merseyside club’s willingness to sell.
