Liverpool hit with further COVID outbreak as training cancelled

Liverpool have had to cancel a training session on Tuesday due to a further outbreak of COVID-19.

Jurgen Klopp is currently isolating alongside first-team stars Joel Matip, Alisson Becker and Roberto Firmino as well as a trio of back room staff members.

The Reds were due to hold training at 4pm at the AXA Centre on Tuesday but have had to cancel the plans following an outbreak.

The training ground does still remain open, however, despite claims that it was shutdown completely as a result of news.

It throws plans for Thursday’s Carabao Cup tie at Arsenal into doubt as well as Sunday’s visit from Shrewsbury Town in the third round of the FA Cup.

The Reds are due to play the Gunners at the Emirates in the first leg of the semi-final before they host Steve Cotterill's side at Anfield.

Discussions are believed to have been held with the EFL ahead of the semi-final first leg. However, no formal request to cancel the game has yet been made.

Liverpool were reluctant to request a postponement for Sunday's draw at Chelsea following the positive tests of Matip, Alisson, Firmino and Klopp and have, as of Tuesday afternoon, not asked to call off the visit to Arsenal.

Pep Lijnders was scheduled to take charge of the games this week but they are now in doubt following Tuesday’s cancellation of training.

Liverpool have yet to cancel Wednesday morning's press conference, however.

The Reds were forced to make do without Fabinho, Virgil van Dijk or Curtis Jones for the ganes against Newcastle and Tottenham last month due to COVID before Thiago Alcantara also tested positive.

The club have been unwilling to request a rescheduling across the festive and New Year period, though, with their only postponement coming from Leeds United's request on Boxing Day.
