Liverpool heroics, whipping fans into frenzy and big-screen messages - how Brentford's Thomas Frank masterminded date with Swansea City

Thomas Frank made his Brentford players watch footage of Liverpool's extraordinary 4-0 win against Barcelona prior to his side's Championship play-off semi-final victory over Bournemouth.

The Bees trailed 1-0 at the midway stage of their two-legged affair with the Cherries but won the second leg 3-1 at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Frank's men had to do it the hard way though after falling 1-0 behind to Arnaut Danjuma's early strike in London.

But our sister title football.london report how the Danish boss took inspiration from Liverpool's famous 4-3 aggregate victory over Barcelona in the semi-finals of the 2018/19 Champions League having been 3-0 down after the first leg.

“I know we’re not Liverpool,” Frank said. “There’s a lot of extraordinary European nights but I think Liverpool is the one where we found the most over the years.

“Those six and a half minutes, I showed that to the players, where they scored the first goal and the way they came out, the way they pressed the counter pressing, the way they played it.

“And then we jumped to the second half and I showed them that before the second goal they defended low, 10 men behind the ball against Barcelona, and then they win it, counter the other way, lose it, win it, counter press, 2-0. Then from the kick off it became 3-0. That is the mindset we needed to come with.”

Frank more than played his part in the success as he whipped up a frenzy before kick-off with a lap around the perimeter of the Brentford Community Stadium pitch.

Several inspirational messages were also shown on the new venue's big screens before the game got under way.

Brentford are the odds on favourites to emerge victorious against Swansea at Wembley.

However, the sides could not be split during the regular season - with both matches between the pair ending 1-1.

The Bees defeated Swansea in last season's play-off semi-finals but ultimately fell at the final hurdle as they were beaten by Fulham at Wembley.

But Frank believes Brentford's experience of playing in the showpiece event just shy of 10 months ago will stand them in good stead against Steve Cooper's outfit.

“It’s a good thing we have a whole week to prepare,” he said.

“The experience of being there last year will help us. We will be unbelievably well prepared.

"We’ll give everything and pray and hope.”

The Championship play-off final kicks off at 3pm on Saturday, May 29.
