Liverpool headlines as Philippe Coutinho clause cleared up and Thiago message sent

Here are your Liverpool morning headlines for Monday, August 24.

The truth about the Coutinho clause

There have been rumours doing the rounds on social media recently, and not just about transfer deals for once.

The story went that Liverpool were due to receive a financial boost in the form of an add-on for the Philippe Coutinho deal if the Brazilian won the Champions League with Bayern Munich.

And while Coutinho was indeed successful as his side defeated Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 last night, the truth is slightly different.

It is understood the remaining fee is related to appearance-based milestones.

Liverpool are now only £4.4m away from collecting the full £36m of add-ons which were agreed when the deal was struck in January 2018.

Rooney impressed by Thiago, hopes he doesn’t join Liverpool

The most prominent transfer rumour related to Liverpool this summer is that Thiago Alcantara could be on his way to Anfield.

Liverpool have knocked the speculation down in recent weeks - but it remains to be seen if the situation develops.

The 29-year-old was part of the Bayern Munich team which lifted the Champions League trophy aloft last night, but he is rumoured to be leaving the club this summer.

Writing in his Sunday Times column, former Manchester United and Everton striker Wayne Rooney has tipped the Spaniard to shine in the Premier League. He therefore obviously hopes he doesn’t sign for the Reds.

"He can take the ball, be composed on it, keep things ticking over – and he’ll put his foot in. He’s an all-round midfielder, really, with a bit of everything,” Rooney wrote.

Torres sends message to Liverpool

Fernando Torres was a hero to Kopites during his time with Liverpool. Part of that was undone by moving to Chelsea, though a lot of water has gone under the bridge in the intervening decade.

And when announcing on social media that he is about to become a coach, Torres paid tribute to his former club and congratulated them on their league title triumph.

“In addition, we have celebrated that my beloved @liverpoolfc have won a @premierleague after 30 years and unfortunately football is played without supporters in the stands, the element that makes this sport so special,” he wrote.
