Liverpool have three crucial Champions League advantages over RB Leipzig

Liverpool will face RB Leipzig in the last-16 of the Champions League this season, with their trip to Germany coming on Tuesday, February 16, and the return leg at Anfield on Wednesday, March 10.

With that tie will come a number of different narratives, born out of the links between Liverpool and the Red Bull group - not least former Reds boss Gerard Houllier, who it was announced had passed away today, and who had previously worked for the group's scouting team.

Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and Takumi Minamino are also products of the Red Bull football group, while Jurgen Klopp's greatest coaching influence, Ralf Rangnick, was Red Bull's head of sport until July.

But the only link that Klopp and his players will be focused on is the fact that the teams will go head-to-head in 2021, hoping to book their place in the quarter-finals.

Liverpool could have faced more difficult opponents, certainly, but in Leipzig, who are third in the Bundesliga, level on points with Bayern Munich, but leading the way in terms of the expected numbers of goals scored and conceded, they face a tricky task.

Atletico Madrid and Barcelona would perhaps have been even more tricky than Leipzig, but Julian Nagelsmann's side will pose a significant hurdle to overcome if Liverpool are to go further in the competition this season than they did last.

But Liverpool do have a few things that should give them the edge in the clash, as was outlined on the Analysing Anfield podcast, which will be released on Tuesday, December 15.

Josh Williams explained: "I would expect goals, but I would certainly lean towards Liverpool, certainly over two legs.

"Consider how Leipzig were hanging on in the latter stages against Manchester United [in the group stage]. In the last 10 minutes, Peter Gulacsi, the goalkeeper who used to be at Liverpool, prevented two own-goals.

"Over two legs, in a knockout tie, Liverpool, I think, will get through, and I think it is reasonable to suggest Liverpool are the more evolved version of Leipzig at the minute."

"You could be looking at a very different Liverpool side by then, as well, and I think that will be key," David Hughes added.

"If you have Diogo Jota back in the side and Thiago as well, you have a Liverpool team who are back to being as good as they can be.

"Hopefully there will be more fans inside Anfield and the second leg is at home, so I would be confident.

"The key thing with Atletico Madrid last season was that you knew if they scored, they had what it takes to see it out and not be impacted too much by the atmosphere, even though Liverpool played really well in the second leg.

"RB Leipzig looked shaky in the final 15 against Manchester United, in a game at home that they were commanding.

"If Liverpool were trailing with 15 minutes to go at Anfield, you would fancy them to get it and Leipzig to buckle.

"There are too many things in Liverpool's favour [for Leipzig to knock them out]."

Leipzig, certainly, will be a test, but Liverpool will hope to have several key men back in contention after a series of injuries by that point in the season, and could even have dipped into the January transfer market too.

Combining Liverpool's superior ability to control matches, thanks to their greater European experience, the fact that they will hope to have several top players back from injury lay-offs, and that Reds fans should be inside Anfield by March, and the reasons for optimism in their Leipzig tie are clear for Klopp and his players.
