Liverpool 'have their swagger back' as Jurgen Klopp told Thiago Alcantara position switch was key

Liverpool have “got their swagger back” following their impressive win over Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday, according to Mark Lawrenson.

The Reds ended their five-game winless streak in the Premier League with a 3-1 victory over Jose Mourinho’s side in north London.

Roberto Firmino tapped in just before half-time and Trent Alexander-Arnold made it 2-0 just after the break with a powerful rebound.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg got Spurs back into it with a stunning strike from distance, but Sadio Mane made the points safe with a well-taken third.

Liverpool had failed to score in their previous four league matches, but looked somewhere near their best against Tottenham, with the front three of Mane, Firmino and Mohamed Salah showing signs of form.

“Yeah I think they’ve got their swagger back a little bit,” former Liverpool defender Lawrenson said on the BBC’s Football Focus.

“At Old Trafford, although it was a loss, you could sense there was something different about them and the thing about the front three, for three years they’ve been unbelievable, they seriously have, but in all honesty Tottenham defensively were pathetic.”

Liverpool dominated the game in all areas, creating more chances while completely shutting down Tottenham in the second half after Harry Kane went off injured.

Joel Matip’s injury did not prove costly, as Nat Phillips breezed through the second half untested and Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson looked dangerous down the flanks once more.

However, it was the balance of the midfield three that impressed former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock, with James Milner, Gini Wijnaldum and Thiago Alcantara on song.

“I thought the game against Manchester United in the FA Cup, they showed signs they were coming back to their best, then it was just tinkering with a few situations, positions on the pitch,” Warnock said.

“Thiago was better in the advanced position, I thought Wijnaldum was better holding. It suited him more – he looks like the anchor man who can do that job so he will probably stay in that position.

“The signs were there that the front three were back to their best as well.”

Liverpool will hope to build on the win when they travel to face in-form West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday.

David Moyes’ side have won their last four Premier League games and are unbeaten in the league since their 3-0 defeat by Chelsea on December 21.
