Liverpool have taken just two Premier League matches to prove Thiago Alcantara myth wrong

Liverpool have seen a total of just 135 minutes of Premier League football from Thiago Alcantara to date, but the hope is that there will be plenty more performances that see him reach similar levels or higher.

Even simple five-yard passes have been praised so far such as been the hype around the player, and that hype is certainly justified.

When Thiago arrived at Anfield from Bayern Munich, he was a seven-time Bundesliga winner and current Champions League holder, but still a myth around what he might bring to the table surrounded him.

On the Analysing Anfield podcast, Josh Williams said: "With players like this, there is a narrative, or maybe an expectation, that he is a luxury player and that he has to be carried without the ball but neat and aesthetically pleasing with possession.

"But that is not the case with Thiago - he is industrious and he is a bit of a grafter. His interceptions and his anticipation are great. He won a tackle against Chelsea and gave himself a silent fist pump!

"On the defensive side of the game, he again fits the mould - he is not going to be a passenger. He makes just as many interceptions as the other Liverpool midfielders might."

That was evidenced again during the match against Everton, where Thiago was more than capable of putting his foot in. Even the robust tackle that saw Richarlison get sent off could not force him off the field of play, though he will miss the Ajax clash as a result.

At Goodison Park, Thiago was dispossessed just once, won the one tackle that he had to put in, and made seven successful ball recoveries, giving away just one foul.

There were no fans inside Goodison Park to make it an even more testing afternoon, but for a first Merseyside derby performance, that was not a bad showing.

The idea, then, that Thiago is not an ideal number six in the Premier League, where his defensive capabilities will be tested considerably at times, is simply wrong.

As David Hughes added: "He came from a really intense, pressing system so it was not as if we were looking at [a player who will have to get used to] the intricacies of the different system.

"Klopp eluded to before the Chelsea game when asked if he was in contention to start. He laughed it off and said he didn’t know enough about the system but there is some similarities - the fundamentals will very much be there."

So far, the evidence of that is clear. Thiago has already been a transformational player for Liverpool, and had Jordan Henderson's goal late on against Everton stood, created by his delightful disguised pass into Sadio Mane, that would have been a just reward.
