Liverpool have not declined invitation to fight online racism

Suggestions in a national newspaper that Liverpool are not interested in tackling online racism in have been met with dismay at Anfield.

The Guardian published an article claiming that Manchester City, Norwich City, Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea are the only Premier League clubs to have accepted an invitation to work with the police to try and stop online racism.

However, the ECHO understands that Liverpool has not declined the invitation of chief constable Mark Roberts, who is the National Police Chiefs’ Council’s football lead and the club takes all forms of racism and discrimination with the utmost of seriousness and will respond to the letter in due course.

At the end of last season, Liverpool launched their Red Together Reporting Hub, which gives supporters a platform to report incidents of online abuse and discrimination directly to the club and the Premier League to allow investigations to take place.

They also introduced dedicated reporting software to help protect players and staff in conjunction with Merseyside Police, the CPS, the Premier League and other key stakeholders to investigate reports of racism and discrimination.

Liverpool signed up to the Premier League’s Anti-Discrimination Commitment at the beginning of the current season and when it comes to both their men’s and women’s players, have strong support structures in place where they can raise instances of online and in-person discrimination and they are in regular dialogue with the social media platforms to address incidents of online abuse on their platforms.
