Liverpool have chance to act on transfer 'interest' revealed by smiling Jurgen Klopp

Of all the names thrown at Liverpool in the opening seven days of the January transfer window, one stands out.

And that's because Jurgen Klopp has been interested in the player in question.

The Liverpool boss even went as far to admitting it during a press conference once, albeit with a huge smile on his face.

Klopp's admission came after his Reds side lost 1-0 at Chelsea on the penultimate weekend of the 2017-18 Premier League season.

Much of the post-match debate centred around Liverpool's hopes of finishing in the top four - which they would seal with a final-day victory over Brighton at Anfield seven days later - and whether they'd played with half an eye on the upcoming Champions League final against Real Madrid in Kiev.

But during the game reports emerge from France that Liverpool had agreed a deal to sign Nabil Fekir.

Klopp was asked about them and, after laughing, replied: "During the game? We agreed a deal?! I would be surprised about that, to be honest, but... No comment."

Given that the Reds did ultimately try to sign Fekir soon after, looking back perhaps it's no surprise that Klopp had his lips sealed.

But the Reds manager was more forthcoming when the same reporter in the media room at Stamford Bridge asked about a separate link, to Ousmane Dembele, who was coming toward the end of his first season at Barcelona following his move from Borussia Dortmund.

Klopp said: "What was the second name? Ousmane Dembele? Oooh, is he on the market? Now I am interested."

Cue much laugher among the assembled press pack before he added: "Obviously, you (the reporter) are not from Liverpool. I never comment on transfer rumours. I've said already much more than I usually say."

Klopp may have been wearing one of his famous grins, but his interest was real, or at least had been real.

Dembele admitted that, himself, when speaking exclusively in the April 2017 issue of FourFourTwo magazine.

He said: "I saw Klopp in Paris but I told him I'd made up my mind to sign for BVB.”

Dembele joined Klopp's old club Dortmund in the summer of 2016 after leaving Rennes.

But seemingly there was a chance to join Liverpool.

And over the course of the following 2016-17 season, you could see why the Reds were interested, as Dembele underlined his reputation as one of the finest young players in the world as he scored 10 goals in 49 games, including crucial strikes in the semi-final and final of the DFB-Pokal as Dortmund won their first major title since Klopp's time at the club.

It would be prove to be the forward's sole full season in the Bundesliga as he joined Barcelona in August 2017 for €105million plus add-ons, a fee which means he remains the joint-eighth most expensive player of all time alongside Paul Pogba.

Barca topped that fee later on in the 2017-18 season when they signed Philippe Coutinho from Klopp's Liverpool for a fee that eventually rose to £142m.

Such staggering outlays have in part led the La Liga outfit to the dire financial position they find themselves in today, and that despite returning president Joan Laporta's protestations, means they are still unable to register new £46m signing from Manchester City, Ferran Torres.

Why that is the case was explained in an excellent article from sports journalist Sid Lowe in ESPN.

It's an article that also outlined Barcelona's issue with Dembele, who they want to stay, and who by staying, could actually help the club when it comes to making and registering new signings.

But the ball appears to be very much in the now-24-year-old's court, and as things stand, he seems set to walk away from Camp Nou in the summer as a free agent.

Back in 2018, Klopp would have had no hesitation in signing Dembele.

But his form, and more pertinently, his rotten luck with injuries, means there are doubts over whether Klopp would reignite his interest.

The fact that the France international's wage demands would likely make him one of the highest paid players at Liverpool, at a time when the club have Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Fimino and others going into the final 18 months of their current contracts, would also appear to make a move unlikely, despite the transfer rumours that have re-emerged this month.

But you just wonder if Klopp would still like to work with Dembele, who scored his first goal of the season for Barcelona in midweek.

Perhaps it's worth another question in a press conference...
