Liverpool have 'almost £200m wiped off squad value' as crisis continues

Liverpool have been calculated as having had almost £200million wiped off the value of their squad due to the coronavirus outbreak.

With leagues across the globe having been suspended with as yet no fixed date for their resumption, FIFA have opted to extend the season indefinitely and allow the transfer market to be moved from its usual summer slot.

The widespread financial impact of the pandemic means clubs are expected to be spending significantly less on top players when the window eventually opens.

And Transfermarkt have determined Liverpool will be one of the most hardest hit in terms of player value, having £195.6m wiped off the worth of their overall squad.

It represents a 19.07% cut, and is the second most significant worldwide after Manchester City's decrease of £215m.

In terms of percentage, Crystal Palace are calculated as having the biggest drop in the Premier League with 20.5%, while Norwich City, with 15.3%, have the lowest.

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are judged Liverpool's most valuable players at £108m each, with Trent Alexander-Arnold next on £89.1m. All three are in the Premier League top six, behind leader Raheem Sterling of City.

However, both Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker are calculated as being worth less now than the amount they were bought for, with Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the same position.

“The stock market prices collapsed, many clubs could be threatened by insolvency and transfer plans came to a standstill for most clubs because of the many uncertainties," said Transfermarkt founder Matthias Seidel.

"At the moment, it is difficult to imagine that transfer fees will continue to rise as they have in previous years in the foreseeable future."
