Liverpool handed Premier League title boost as battle with Man City hots up

Liverpool have been handed a big boost ahead of the Premier League run in after Joe Gomez returned to training.

The England defender hasn't played since December 5 after fracturing his leg in the win at Burnley .

However, Gomez is on the road to recovery and has resumed light training at Liverpool's Melwood headquarters.

Manager Jurgen Klopp said: "Joe is not injured anymore and nearly fit after a long time.

"I think Joe was out for 15 weeks. That's long so he needs to now create the basis again for the rest of the season."

Gomez's return to fitness will give the Reds a huge lift for the final seven games of the season as they battle it out with Manchester City for top spot.

Elsewhere, Xherdan Shaqiri should be back for Sunday's crunch clash against Tottenham .

The Swiss star was forced to return from international duty due to an “inflammation of the pubic area”.

However, it is understood he will be ready to face Spurs at Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds have a slight doubt over defender Trent Alexander-Arnold after he pulled out of England's squad for the games against the Czech Republic and Montenegro.

"Trent still feels his back. We're not 100 percent sure so we have to watch him," Klopp told Liverpool's website.

"It's not an obvious injury that you can say something is broke or whatever, it's just a bit annoying actually that he cannot feel really free."

ALEX OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN UNDERGOES BRUTAL TRAINING REGIME

Meanwhile, midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has suffered a setback as he batles back from a long-term knee injury.

Klopp added: "Ox is positive, we are all positive. It was a little setback. That's how it is. We're careful of course... and I think he'll be in training in a week again."
